Before you purchase a turbocharger there is homework that needs to be done.   This is not typical car that you stick a turbocharger replacement on and expect a long turbo life span.  We have been in business building high performance turbochargers since 2001 and years before I worked doing the same.  I have never witnessed a vehicle that was so harsh on turbochargers such as the Legacy GT and the Outback XT!  The cars are plagued by oil supply issues going to the turbocharger.  Since we specialized in these VF40 and VF46 units, 99 out of 100 turbo cores failed from oil starvation.  Pre 2012 we worked based upon turbo core exchange.  Most of the failures were so catastrophic that the turbine wheel and shaft separated because of oil starvation.  The easiest and best solution to this problem is to bypass the original oil line and it’s location and get the oil supply for the turbocharger either from an aftermarket sandwich plate that goes between the engine oil filter and filter housing, or tapping into the oil pressure sending unit passage.  When bypassing the stock turbocharger oil supply line you don’t have to deal with turbocharger failures due to lack of oil pressure, or lack of oil volume from clogged banjo bolt filters, restricted oil lines, faulty Oil Control Valves (OCV’s).  If you have a failing oil pump or failing engine, the turbocharger can still suffer failure.  After implementing this oil line update to your car, it drastically improves turbo longevity!  [Oil line bypass kit link coming soon!]

BNR Supercars has been specializing in the LGT and the OBXT turbocharger upgrades since 2010.  We offer 4 different upgrade options to suit your needs.  From near stock, to built engines.  Our version 3 updates made our units the best fitting, best quality and best bang for the buck out there!  Every other aftermarket turbo manufacturers out there have issues with turbo intake to intake manifold clearance due to improper turbine housing design.  Our turbine housings position the compressor side of the turbocharger away from the intake manifolds so clearance is not an issue!  All of our turbocharger upgrades I would highly suggest a tune.  You will gain mileage and performance when upgrading your turbocharger.  Believe it or not, that mileage savings will pay for the tune over time!  (as long as your staying out of it of course).  When you upgrade the turbocharger, you also have to keep transmission in mind!

From what we gather from customers there are limitations both the automatic and the manual transmissions.  The automatics (5eat) reach a torque limit at around 15-16 psi of boost on the turbo upgrades due to reaching torque capacity limits.  It is suggested at 15-16 psi to upgrade the valve body to increase the fluid pressure inside the transmission to raise the torque limitation.  The manual gear boxes on the other hand are decently strong.  They seem to stay happy at the 350 awhp mark.  You can go further than 350 but chances of trans failure increase.

Our best selling LGT OBXT unit!  It is great on the stock fuel system as long as it is tuned and boost stays below 17-18 psi (estimated 260-290 awhp).  There is room to go up to 350 awhp with upgraded fuel injectors and fuel pump.  Most customers target 300 awhp and the 16g performs perfectly for their application.  Full boost is around 2900 rpm with one of the most broad power band, without the drastic boost fall off in the upper rpms that the vf40-46-52 turbochargers have!  The internal wastegate on the 16g is set at 13 psi crack pressure and is easily adjusted on the car with the double jam nut wastegate rod end.  Here is what you get with the BNR EVO 3 LGT OBXT:

Our 2nd best selling LGT OBXT unit!  It is great on the stock fuel system as long as it is tuned and boost stays below  13-14 psi (estimated 260-290 awhp).  There is room to go up to 365 awhp with upgraded fuel injectors and fuel pump.  Most customers target 350 awhp and the 18G performs perfectly for their application.  Full boost is around 3200 rpm with a very streetable power band, without the drastic boost fall off in the upper rpms that the vf40-46-52 turbochargers have!  The internal wastegate on the 18g is set at 14 psi crack pressure and is easily adjusted on the car with the double jam nut wastegate rod end.

The 20g is not good for stock fueling.   Most customers target 350-400awhp with this turbocharger.  Full boost is around 3500 rpm with a streetable power band, without the drastic boost fall off in the upper rpms that the vf40-46-52 turbochargers have!  Our 20g out spools the competition 20g units because of our high flow TD05 turbine wheel.  The TD05HF turbine outflows a standard TD05H wheel by close to 100 hp with no sacrifice on response!  The internal wastegate on the 20g is set at 15 psi crack pressure and is easily adjusted on the car with the double jam nut wastegate rod end.
